St. Brigid's Millers Point: History When Bishop William Ullathorne arrived in New South Wales in 1833 he found that there were no Catholic schools or even completed places of worship. The construction of the original St. Mary's began in 1821 but was still incomplete. After negotiations with the Government, Bishop Ullathorne was given an assurance by Governor Burke that land would be granted at Millers Point for the construction of a school house that could serve as a chapel on Sundays. The land was granted to the Church in 1833. The Colonial Architect, Ambrose Hallen in consultation with Bishop Ullathorne, designed the school building. Work commenced on the building in August, 1834, with an estimated expenditure of £546.7.0 and was completed by May, 1835.
