St. Brigid's Millers Point: History The school closed for a period of time between 1874 and 1880. To mark the reopening of the school, a finely decorated bronze bell, cast by Bardin Aine in Lyon, was installed. That bell is still in use today. To mark the centenary of the foundation of St. Brigid's, the architects Roarty & Roarty were engaged to design a first floor addition to which the school could be relocated, allowing the downstairs to be used exclusively as a church. Archbishop Kelly, assisted by the Parish Priest, Father Daniel Hurley, officiated at the opening. At the same time, the church was renovated. Wooden windows were replaced by steel framed windows. New silky oak pews were provided and the altar enlarged. Both church and school have played a very important role in the Millers Point community. With the changing demographics of the area, the number of Catholic children gradually declined until the school was closed at the end of Term 1, 1992. The church of St. Brigid's continues to be a very important place of
worship and meeting for the Catholic community of Millers Point. |
